KEVIN T. MURPHY

Military Experience

October 1980 – April 2013: United States Army

-Served in reserve capacity in U.S. Army Special Forces from October 1980 until April 1984.  Attended and graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course and attained the rank of Sergeant.

-April 1984 to April 2013, served on active duty attending Officer Candidate School and commissioned as a Lieutenant.  Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in Special Forces. Served in Airborne Infantry for three years and Special Forces for over 25 years, allotting over 90 months of combat and peacetime command time at team, platoon, company, and joint task force levels. Graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Air Force Air Command and General Staff College. 

Fire

  • February 2010 – February 2026– Stoney Point Fire Department – Assistant Chief responsible for suppression operations.  Serve as the department training officer with responsibility to assess, devise, coordinate, execute and oversee all training for an eighty-member volunteer fire department. Responsible for crafting policies and SOGs in support of accreditation. Served as the Training Committee Chairperson for the Cumberland County Fire Chief’s Association.
  • January 2008 – January 2010 – Stoney Point Fire Department – Served as a company level Captain with responsibility for suppression, EMS and technical rescue operations. Responsible for the immediate supervision of an eight – ten firefighter crew assigned to Tuesday night.  Responsibilities included training my assigned crew and other members of the fire department on Firefighter I and II subjects, Driver Operator and Live Burn. 
  • June 2000 – December 2008 – Stoney Point Fire Department – Served as a company level Captain and training officer with primary responsibility for developing, coordinating and executing fire training for an eighty-member volunteer fire department and a secondary responsibility for suppression.  Served on the truck committees for two new apparatus. 
  • June 1998 – June 2000 – Stoney Point Fire Department – inactive status quo due to military assignment at Ft. Campbell, KY.
  • August 1996 – June 1998 – Stoney Point Fire Department – Served as a firefighter and engineer.  
  • January 1984 – April 1984 – Allendale Fire Department – Served as Assistant Chief with responsibilities for incident command and supervision of suppression operations for a thirty-firefighter department.  
  • January 1979 – December 1983 – Allendale Fire Department.  Served as a company level Captain responsible for suppression and rescue operations for a thirty-man department. 
  • January 1977 – December 1979—Allendale Fire Department. Served as a company-level Lieutenant, responsible for supervising suppression operations and training for a thirty-man department. Held responsibility for Engineer training and specific responsibility for training the entire department on a newly arrived fire engine. 
  • January 1973 – December 1976 – Allendale Fire Department.  Served as a firefighter and firefighter/engineer.  
  • November 1971 – January 1973 – Allendale Junior Fire Department.  Charter member of the Junior Fire Department. Served as a Junior Lieutenant on this twelve-firefighter junior fire department. 
  • January 1975- December 1976 Saddle River Valley Rescue Squad. Served as a Lieutenant with primary responsibility for supervising heavy, technical, and automotive rescue operations for this twenty-man heavy rescue squad as well as suppression operations in support of two volunteer fire departments.  
  • January 1970- June 1975 – Saddle River Valley Rescue Squad. Charter member of this organization. Served as a rescue man for this volunteer heavy rescue squad primarily tasked for heavy, technical, automotive rescue and supporting suppression operations for two volunteer fire departments.

Instructor:

  • Jan 2012 to June 2013 – Part time Fire Protection Technology instructor at Fayetteville Technical Community College teaching Introduction to Fire Prevention and Introduction to Fire Protection. 
  • Apr 2013 to Jan 2026 – Part time instructor at the E. E. Smith High School Fire Academy.  Taught Firefighter I&II subjects as part of this curriculum. 
  • Feb 2003 to Present—Part-time fire instructor for Fayetteville Technical Community College, Robeson Technical Community College, Sandhills Community College, and Brunswick Community College. Subjects taught have been Fire Instructor I&II, Fire Officer I&II, Firefighter I&II, Driver Operator (Pumps and Aerials), Emergency Vehicle Driver, and Live Burn. 
  • 1979 – 1984 – Instructor at the Bergen County Vocational School. Taught collapse rescue as part of the Rescue Program. 

Awards:

  • North Carolina Fire Chief’s Association Fire Officer of the Year 2020
  • Stoney Point Firefighter of the Year 2001
  • Northwest Bergen Mutual Aid Association Valor Award – awarded January 1975 for a rescue performed August 15, 1974. 
  • New Jersey State Exempt Fireman – awarded for minimum of 60% attendance at fires over a 7-year period.
