Fire Services
Fire Suppression & Rescue
St. James Fire Department maintains a fully equipped fire suppression force ready to respond to any emergency. Our firefighters train continuously to meet NFPA standards and are prepared for structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle accidents, technical rescues, and hazardous materials incidents.
Our fire apparatus fleet includes three pumper engines, an aerial platform truck, a brush truck, and a rescue unit — all staffed by volunteers who live and work in the community they protect. We respond to approximately 200–300 fire-related calls per year across our 8-square-mile district, which includes the St. James Plantation residential community and surrounding areas. In addition to emergency response, our fire team leads prevention efforts by providing homeowners with guidance and educational materials on home safety, smoke detector maintenance, and ways to reduce fire risk before emergencies occur.
- Structure fire suppression and overhaul
- Vehicle extrication and technical rescue
- Wildland and brush fire response
- Hazardous materials first response
- Water rescue and flood response

Emergency Medical Services
Basic Life Support and Emergency Medical Care
Our EMS division provides Basic Life Support (BLS) services and through partnering with Brunswick County EMS, Advanced Life Support (ALS) services to the St. James community. Staffed by certified EMTs, our two ambulances are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and ready to respond around the clock.
EMS calls represent the largest share of our annual call volume — over 60% of all responses. Our medics handle everything from cardiac emergencies and strokes to trauma, respiratory distress, and medical assists. We work in close coordination with Brunswick County EMS and area hospitals including Dosher Memorial Hospital and Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center. Beyond emergency response, our EMS team is committed to community health through programs like Vial of Life, CPR and Stop the Bleed training, and participation in community health events. We also provide mutual aid to neighboring departments throughout Brunswick County.

Fire Police
Scene Safety & Traffic Control
The St. James Fire Police unit is a specialized team of trained volunteers who provide traffic control, scene security, and public safety support at emergency incidents and community events. Fire Police are a critical part of every major response, protecting both responders and the public.
When fire engines and ambulances respond to an emergency, Fire Police are the first to arrive — establishing a safe perimeter, directing traffic away from the scene, and coordinating with law enforcement. Their work allows firefighters and medics to focus entirely on the emergency at hand without concern for scene safety. Beyond emergency scenes, our Fire Police volunteers support community events throughout St. James Plantation, assist with road closures, and provide a visible public safety presence at parades, festivals, and other gatherings.
- Traffic control at emergency scenes
- Scene perimeter and security
- Coordination with law enforcement
- Road closures and detour management
- Community event safety support
- Over 36 hours per year of incident management and HAZMAT training
Community Programs
Beyond emergency response, we are committed to education, prevention, and community well-being.
Smoke Detector Program
Homeowners are responsible for regularly testing, maintaining, and replacing batteries in all smoke detectors to help ensure they remain operational and provide early warning in the event of a fire.
