Training That Prepares You to Serve

Our training programs equip every volunteer with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to perform assigned duties safely, professionally, and effectively.

St. James Fire Department maintains a fully equipped fire suppression force ready to respond to emergencies across the district. Our volunteer firefighters train continuously to meet NFPA standards and respond confidently to structure and wildland fires, vehicle accidents, technical rescues, and hazardous materials incidents. Each new recruit completes three months of hands-on training, followed by twice-weekly drills, specialized instruction, and ongoing mentorship to maintain the skills needed to serve safely and effectively.
St. James EMS provides around-the-clock Basic Life Support services to the St. James community, with Advanced Life Support available through our partnership with Brunswick County EMS. Each EMT completes a six-month college-level BLS EMT program, passes the required state examination, and participates in monthly training on a range of emergency medical topics to maintain the skills and readiness our community depends on.
The St. James Fire Police Unit is a trained volunteer team that supports emergency incidents and community events through traffic control, roadway safety, scene security, and public-safety assistance. Volunteers work alongside fire, EMS, law enforcement, and other responders, provide CPR and AED care during cardiac arrests, and assist with lift-assist calls under EMS direction. With more than 36 hours of annual incident-management and hazardous-materials training, Fire Police help protect responders, patients, and the public.
